Lavrov: peace in the Middle East can only be achieved with respect for the sovereignty of the countries of the region

It is only possible to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East by respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states of the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in his greetings to the participants of the Middle East conference of the Valdai discussion club.


"We consistently believe that it is possible to ensure peace and stability in the entire Middle East only by relying on international law while respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of its countries", the Russian Foreign Minister said in his message.


As Lavrov stressed, the Syrian state was preserved based on these principles, the traditional Middle East conference of the Valdai discussion club is being held today.


Its topic is "Middle East in a Time of Change:  Towards New Stability Architecture".


30 foreign and 20 Russian delegates will take part in the discussion, including Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, Minister of Social Development of the State of Palestine Ahmad Majdalani, Director of the Political Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization Anwar Abdulhade, Senior Advisor to Iranian Foreign Minister Mehdi Sanaei, Member of the Lebanese Parliament Amal Abou Zeid, as well as authoritative experts from Russia, the United States, Israel, Turkey, Great Britain, France, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Syria and other countries.


The conference is focused on scenarios for the development of the situation in the Middle East, the transformation of regional architecture, and aspects of the current state of affairs in the Middle East: from regional trends to the growth of conflict and the activation of protest movements to the situation in specific countries.
