Russia will persist in aiding African nations in bolstering their military capabilities to counter ongoing threats, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following discussions with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.
"Russia is committed to making and will continue to make a constructive contribution to the global and African efforts to stabilize the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region. We will support the region's countries in enhancing their national armed forces' combat capability and effectiveness, as well as the security forces and law enforcement agencies, to effectively counter threats," Lavrov said.
The Russian foreign minister highlighted the importance of addressing terrorist and jihadist groups, illegal arms trade, human trafficking, and drug trafficking, which are prevalent in many parts of Africa. "We appreciate Nigeria's significant efforts and focus on continuing to combat these threats," he noted.
Lavrov also touched on the situation in Sudan, expressing Russia's support for Nigeria's stance on ending armed confrontations and emphasizing the role of the African Union in mediation.
Regarding the ongoing crises in Africa, Lavrov pointed out the tensions between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the new authorities in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. "We and ECOWAS have long-standing friendly relations, and we are committed to the countries of the region maintaining their solidarity in combating common threats," he stated. Lavrov expressed hope for dialogue and a balance of interests to resolve the issues, emphasizing Russia's readiness to facilitate these processes and the importance of preserving ECOWAS's integration potential.
