09 December 2021

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a telephone conversation with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan pointed to the need to start work on the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border as soon as possible, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The foreign ministers discussed topical issues of the bilateral, regional and international agenda. Special attention was paid to the implementation of the Sochi agreements of November 26, 2021, between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia. From the Russian side an emphasis is made on the need to ensure the speedy launch of work on the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border with its subsequent demarcation," the statement reads.

Lavrov, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, also pointed to the need to translate into practice the agreements within the trilateral working group on the unblocking of transport and economic ties, co-chaired by the vice-premiers of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia.

On the situation around Karabakh

The situation in the conflict zone around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, when active hostilities broke out in the region. On November 9 of the same year, a trilateral statement was signed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which achieved a complete cessation of hostilities in the territory.

A few months later, on January 11, the leaders of the three countries met in Moscow in person. The negotiations proved fruitful - it was agreed to create a working group at the level of deputy prime ministers of the three countries, which would focus on the establishment of transport and economic relations in the region.

On November 26 this year, trilateral negotiations of the Russian president, the president of Azerbaijan and the prime minister were held in Sochi on the occasion of the anniversary of the signing of a statement on a cease-fire and all military operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. Putin, Aliyev and Pashinyan agreed to take steps to improve stability and security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. They also intend to establish a bilateral commission for delimitation and demarcation of the state border between the two countries. The Russian Federation will provide consultative assistance at the request of the parties.
