Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, during the UN General Assembly meetings.
Saudi Arabia had recently hosted discussions between the Saudi authorities and representatives of the ruling Ansar Allah (Houthis) group in northern Yemen to address the Yemeni conflict. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its support for Saudi Arabia's efforts in resolving the Yemeni conflict amid negotiations between the Houthi movement in Yemen and the Saudi side in Riyadh.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously stated its expectation that the latest round of direct talks between Riyadh and Sana'a, facilitated by Oman, would help establish a lasting ceasefire in Yemen. Additionally, it was seen as a significant step towards creating a unified vision for the post-conflict resolution of the Yemeni crisis.
The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing since 2016, with hostilities between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government, backed by Saudi Arabia.
