18 January 2022

Russia and Germany have common approaches on the most fundamental issues of the Afghan agenda in terms of suppressing the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking, risks of migration growth and the need to help the population of the Asian republic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday at a press conference following talks with German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock.

"We also have such a burning topic as Afghanistan. We have generally common approaches to the most fundamental issues on Afghanistan's agenda. This also concerns combating the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking, the risks of increased migration flows, and, of course, the need for humanitarian aid to the population," said the head of the Russian MFA.

Lavrov pointed out that the sides also have a dialogue on a number of areas, including the Middle East and North Africa. "Russia actively participated in the conferences that were held on the Libyan settlement in Berlin and Paris. And now we are interested in seeing that the agreements reached back then are implemented as soon as possible," he said.

According to the minister, the Russian side provided its partners from Germany information on Moscow's efforts for a final political settlement in Syria and the resolution of humanitarian problems and issues of economic recovery in the country. "Germany and I are also cooperating quite fruitfully on creating conditions for the resumption of full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to resolve the situation around the Iranian nuclear program," he added.
