26 May 2023

Russia is grateful for the decision of Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to personally participate in the Russia-Africa summit, which will be held in St. Petersburg in July. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this on Friday following talks with Somali Foreign Minister Abshir Omar Huruse.

"We are grateful to Somali friends for the decision of Somali President Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to personally participate in this event," Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister also noted that Russia appreciates the balanced position that Somalia takes on issues related to the developments around Ukraine. "We share our assessments of the situation, and I think the vast majority of developing countries understand the origins of this crisis, which are rooted in the desire of the United States and its allies to strengthen their dominance not only in Europe by expanding NATO, contrary to all the assurances given not to do so, but also in other regions," he stressed.

Furthermore, Lavrov said that Russia, in turn, would support the Somali government's legitimate positions during the UN Security Council's deliberations on the situation in that country. "We consider it very important to start lifting, albeit gradually, but nevertheless lifting the sanctions that were once announced," the minister added. - "They are already hindering the Somali government's efforts to stabilize the situation."
