The Russian side highly appreciates the independence of the Islamic world in the difficult international situation caused by unilateral actions of the West, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said  on Monday, opening talks with Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha.

"We highly appreciate that in the current difficult international situation, which is complicated by unilateral actions of Western countries, the Islamic world does not compromise its independence, is committed to the principle of sovereign equality of states, committed to the development of international relations based on international law and respect for the civilization and cultural diversity of the modern world," said the Russian foreign minister.

Lavrov expressed confidence that only on the basis of relevant principles it is possible to effectively fight terrorism and effectively solve global problems, which "persist and even worsen."

"Russia and the states of Islamic civilization have been reliable partners for a long time and cooperate in ensuring security and stability and solving economic problems. We aim to further strengthen our cooperation with the OIC states in all directions while respecting your socio-political ways and traditional spiritual and moral values," he added.
