14 September 2022

Moscow calls on the new Afghan authorities to fulfill their earlier obligations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Khovar, the Tajik news agency.

"In our dialogue with the new Afghan authorities we urge them to fulfill their previous commitments, first of all to complete the process of inter-Afghan reconciliation and form truly inclusive power structures reflecting the interests of all key ethnic and political forces of the country, to counter the spread of terrorism and drug crime, to ensure basic human rights principles," said the Russian foreign minister.

Lavrov said that the Russian MFA "notes the steps taken by the Taliban (banned in Russia - TASS) to stabilize the military and political situation and combat drug trafficking. "However, in difficult socio-economic conditions, these actions are limited," he explained.

"We believe that the United States and its allies are responsible for the current deplorable state of the Afghan economy after their failed 20-year presence in the country," Lavrov stressed. - "After all, they are the ones who should assume the main financial obligations for post-war reconstruction of Afghanistan and, as a first step, unfreeze the blocked Afghan assets."
