Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for the immediate cessation of Israel's operation in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need for an urgent resolution to the Palestinian issue based on the establishment of two states, during a press conference following the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting.
"We proceed from the fact that this operation must be immediately stopped, a ceasefire must be ensured, and an urgent solution to the gravest humanitarian problems must be provided," Lavrov stressed.
He further stated that "without any pause, without any delay," it is necessary to move towards resolving the regional conflict through the creation of two states—Israel and Palestine.
Lavrov reiterated that following the attack by the Hamas movement, Russia condemned both the attack and the retaliatory methods employed by Israel, describing these methods as "unacceptable." He noted that Russia had initially proposed a UN Security Council resolution to halt the operation, but the proposal was blocked by the United States.
The Russian foreign minister criticized the United States' position, highlighting that it deemed a resolution calling for a ceasefire during Ramadan as non-binding. Lavrov pointed out that the latest resolution proposed by Washington, and adopted by the UN Security Council, was based on "an alleged agreement reached by Hamas and Israel." He also noted that the Israeli delegation had declared it would not participate in "endless and pointless negotiations," reaffirming its "goal of completely destroying Hamas."
