26 October 2020

Russia does not support the position that the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh can be resolved by military means, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the Athens Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).

"In the history with Nagorno-Karabakh, the nature of the involvement of Russia and Turkey has its own nuances," the minister added. - We do not hide that we do not support the position about the possibility and acceptability of a military solution to this problem. Considering both peoples - Armenian and Azerbaijani - as friendly and brotherly, we cannot share such aspirations".

"Russia and Turkey are working to settle conflicts in the hot spots you have listed (Nagorno-Karabakh, Syria and Libya - TASS). At the same time, it is no secret that our approaches to solving a number of disputable regional issues for objective reasons may differ significantly," said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, answering a question about how Moscow views Turkey's involvement in the above-mentioned conflicts.

Lavrov reminded that the presidents of Russia, the USA and France, as heads of the OSCE Minsk Group, had clearly spoken in favor of the exclusively political settlement. At the same time, he underlined that it is the "troika" of co-chairs that is a universally recognized format for mediation in this conflict.

"On October 10, as a result of 11-hour consultations, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia with the participation of representatives of the USA and France reached agreement on Joint Statement, which envisages ceasefire and resumption of the maximally meaningful negotiation process," Lavrov continued. - We persuade our Turkish partners to use their influence to support such a line. I conducted a series of telephone conversations on the subject of Nagorno-Karabakh with Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu."

"We call on all external players to do everything possible to prevent further development of the military scenario, to cool down the emotions of the parties, to intensify work to create conditions to restart the peace process," summed up the Russian minister.
