The Russian side expects that the issue of Syria's return to the Arab League will be resolved soon, which will help consolidate the positions of Arab partners in the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday at a press conference following talks with the Arab League contact group on Ukraine.

Lavrov noted that he had discussed the situation in Syria, Libya and Yemen with his colleagues. "We expressed hope that the issue of Syria's return to the Arab League will be resolved in the very near future, which will certainly consolidate the positions of our Arab friends in this entire region," the diplomatic chief pointed out.

He also noted that the sides paid special attention to the Palestinian problem, which "has not been solved for many years". "We share the same position: we are for all final status issues, including Jerusalem and its status to be solved only through direct negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis," - continued Lavrov. - "We very much appreciate the efforts made by Egypt and a number of other countries in the region and members of the Arab League to reunite the Palestinians and restore Palestinian unity, and we believe that this is a fundamentally important task which depends only on the Arabs themselves."
