Lavrov: Russia is against external intervention in Iraq and Lebanon

11 December 2019

Russia is against external interference in the situation in Iraq and Lebanon, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference in Washington.

"Regarding the situation in Lebanon and Iraq... we believe that the only way to overcome the current crisis in these countries is national dialogue. I hope that external forces will not interfere neither Lebanon nor Iraq," he said, in particular.

The conflict in Lebanon, according to Lavrov, must be resolved based on respect for the principles of the Lebanese Constitution, and "not allowing any ethnic or religious group to be removed from power."

"In Iraq, Russia stands in solidarity with the local government, which is forced to fight against the remnants of terrorist groups and at the same time, seek to consolidate society," Russian Foreign Minister said.
