Moscow is in favor of resuming the multilateral negotiation process for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, with the participation of the Quartet and the Arab League, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday at a press conference following talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.
"We have long been in favor of resuming the multilateral process on the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, there is a universally recognized collective mediator - the 'Quartet' consisting of Russia, the US, the EU, and the UN," he said. - "It is in such a group, involving the Arab League, it is possible to seek agreements, which should be based on the principles of a two-state solution, as they are fixed in the documents."
Lavrov pointed out that the Quartet has not met for a long time, and its meetings are blocked by the United States. "Unfortunately, the UN secretary-general, who is supposed to initiate such meetings, has left in the shade, apparently not wanting to annoy his American colleagues, while the US has openly proclaimed a course to sort it out themselves and reconcile the Palestinians and Israelis," the minister said. According to him, the conditions proposed by Washington are not in line with the principles laid down in the UN decisions.
On Tuesday, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Israeli security forces stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem with stun grenades and tear gas, as well as rubber bullets and batons. More than 400 people were detained, according to the Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen. Meanwhile, Israeli police reported Wednesday that dozens of young people wearing masks barricaded themselves inside the temple complex and began chanting slogans and calling for riots. Police then had to enter the compound.
