Lavrov: Russia reaches agreement with Taliban on work of international humanitarian structures

01 November 2021

Russia helps Western countries to reach an agreement with the Taliban (banned in Russia) to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan by the mediation of international organizations, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

" It is necessary to provide humanitarian aid right now. I see Western countries starting to make relevant contributions. The question is how to distribute this aid. Many do not want to give it directly to the government, they want to work through international organizations. We see a reason for that and are helping to agree with the current authorities in Kabul to let international organizations, especially humanitarian organizations, do their work," he said.

According to Lavrov, Moscow will also provide some assistance. We ship medical supplies and food to them," he said. Central Asian countries also provide medical supplies," he said.

Participants in the October 20 meeting in the Moscow format on Afghanistan called for urgent humanitarian and economic aid for the country's reconstruction. The sides also proposed to launch a collective initiative to convene a representative international donor conference under the auspices of the United Nations as soon as possible.
