12 December 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has pledged assistance to African countries in achieving independent control over the extraction and development of their resources. He made this commitment during his address at the opening ceremony of the International Congress "Africa Seeks Solutions" at St. Petersburg Mining University.

"Today, St. Petersburg Mining University is at the forefront of fostering scientific and educational collaboration with Africa. The Russian-African consortium of technical universities, known as 'Subsoil of Africa,' has been established as an effective instrument of our cooperation," remarked Lavrov in his greeting, as conveyed by Vsevolod Tkachenko, Director of the Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. "I am confident that the engineering and management professionals trained through this project will assist African countries in asserting control over the extraction and development of their mineral resources and in implementing effective state regulation in environmental management," he added.

In his welcoming speech,  Lavrov emphasized that Russia is prepared to "share knowledge and experience with African friends and provide overall support for their aspirations towards economic sovereignty, including in the field of natural resources management."
