Lavrov: Russian concept of the Persian Gulf implies military-political coordination

Russia's renewed concept of security in the Persian Gulf includes coordination in the military-political sphere. This is the subject of an address by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to participants of the 11th Middle East Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries, and Deputy Foreign Minister, read out the text of the address.


"The updated version of our initiative is focused on the adoption of a long-term program of joint actions to strengthen regional stability. This includes the creation of mechanisms for resolving disputes and conflicts, as well as determining the basic parameters of the future architecture of interstate cooperation in the Persian Gulf," the MFA said in a message. - "The draft Russian document provides for the establishment of multilateral coordination in the military-political sphere, and the establishment of economic, humanitarian, environmental and other ties".


The concept of collective security in the Persian Gulf zone was announced by Russia in July 2019. The prospective strategic goal outlined in the document is to create a holistic mechanism of collective security and cooperation in the region with the involvement of all local states on an equal basis. In 2021, the Russian Federation circulated the concept as an official document of the UN Security Council.
