Russian Foreign Minister said the reason for the tension increase in the Middle East

17 July 2019

The current tension increase in the Middle East is a consequence of the U.S. anti-Iranian line, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Russian "Argumenty i fakty".

"The increase of tensions in the Middle East is the direct consequence of Washington’s and some of its allies' anti-Iranian line. The U.S. is flexing its muscles, it has launched a campaign to discredit Tehran, has accused the Islamic Republic of all the sins", - Lavrov told reporters.

This situation, according to Lavrov, can "break out" at any moment, and "the responsibility for the potentially catastrophic consequences will be on the US".

Iran itself, as the Minister stressed, regularly emphasizes the absence of any aggressive intentions and confirms Russia its interest in establishing regional stability through dialogue with all interested countries.

It is worth noting that a new tension escalation in the Middle East arose after the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal and announced the reapplying all pre-Treaty sanctions against the Islamic Republic. In response to this, Tehran announced that it suspends the implementation of several items of the document.
