Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said he wanted to discuss with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian the possibility of accelerating the full-fledged resumption of the Joint comprehensive plan of action on Iran's nuclear program (JCPOA).
"The priority issue of today's talks will also be the need for a full resumption of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program without any exceptions, without any additions. We want to discuss today how this process can be accelerated," Lavrov said, opening talks with his Iranian counterpart.
The Russian foreign minister stressed that despite the pandemic, Moscow and Tehran continued an intensive political dialogue at all levels, including the level of the presidents.
He also noted that a new area of interaction "will be Iran's accession to the Shanghai cooperation organization (SCO) as a full member," recalling that relevant decisions to begin this process were made at the recent SCO summit in Dushanbe.
According to the Russian foreign minister, among other topics on the agenda of the talks will be interaction in Syria, in other regions of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as ways to restore normal relations in the Persian Gulf zone. "So your visit to the Russian Federation is very, very timely. I am sure that we will do useful work," Lavrov appealed to his Iranian colleague.
Earlier it became known that on Wednesday, the Russian foreign minister discussed the prospects for restoring the JCPOA by phone with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. The conversation took place at the initiative of the American side.
