Lavrov says Russia is ready to strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh

Russia is ready to continue the dialogue with Bangladesh increasing the mutually beneficial cooperation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in his video address on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Bangladesh's independence and the centenary of the state's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.


"Russia is ready to continue the bilateral political dialogue and mutually beneficial practical cooperation. I am sure that the bonds of friendship uniting us will continue to strengthen for the benefit of our citizens," the minister said.


The foreign minister said Bangladesh remains an important economic partner of Russia in South Asia. Last year, despite the coronavirus pandemic, the trade turnover between the two countries increased by almost 15% and exceeded the record of $2.4 billion. "I would especially like to mention the ongoing implementation of the largest joint project on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh Ruppur," Lavrov said. - "Its launch, scheduled for 2023-2024, will contribute to the transition of the local energy industry to a qualitatively new technological level".


The minister praised Bangladesh's contribution to supplying UN peacekeeping missions with military units to resolve conflicts in different regions of the world. "The country is steadily on the path of progress and progressive development and enjoys prestige in the international community. Dhaka takes an active part in solving the global problems of our time, including the fight against poverty and climate change," Lavrov added.
