Lavrov says talks on nuclear deal must be restarted as soon as possible

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted on Thursday in a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian the need for an early resumption of talks in the Vienna format on the situation around the nuclear deal.


"The Russian side noted the urgent need for an early resumption of talks in the Vienna format on the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program. The Iranian side has taken this signal with due seriousness," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.


Situation in Afghanistan


The ministers also discussed the situation in Afghanistan. "It was stressed that Moscow and Tehran adhere to close approaches, stand for a peaceful dialogue of Afghan political forces and the formation of an inclusive government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," the Russian diplomatic office said.


In the context of the discussion of the international agenda, Lavrov and Abdollahian reiterated their intention to continue close coordination in the Astana format on the Syrian settlement. "They also touched on the problems of Iran's interaction with the SCO in the context of the planned consideration of Iran's application for acquiring the status of a full member of this association during the organization's next summit (Dushanbe, September 16-17)," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.


Following the August 18 conversation between Russian and Iranian presidents Vladimir Putin and Ebrahim Raisi, the sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda, and also discussed cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. "The mutual intention for further progressive development of multifaceted Russian-Iranian cooperation was confirmed," the foreign ministry said in a statement. - "The sides agreed to continue contacts on the full range of issues of mutual interest."


The conversation was the first ministerial contact after the Majlis (parliament) of Iran approved yesterday Abdollahian in the post of foreign minister. Smolensk Square noted that the Russian minister in the conversation personally congratulated his Iranian counterpart on this appointment.
