Lavrov says US and EU attempts to isolate Russia are complete fiasco

24 March 2023

Attempts by the United States and the European Union to isolate Russia and turn it into a "pariah" face a complete failure. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov wrote an article for the Russian political magazine Razvedchik (Scout) on Friday.

"The United States and the EU are not the center of the world. The modern world is both global and multipolar. Attempts to isolate Russia, to surround it with a 'cordon sanitaire', to turn it into a 'pariah' are a complete fiasco. The states of the world majority, home to about 85% of the population of the Earth, are not willing to pull 'the chestnuts out of the fire' for the former colonial mother countries," noted the minister.

"Today, the West, which is, as President Vladimir Putin aptly put it, an 'empire of lies,' is no longer perceived by the international community as the ultimate truth, as a certain ideal of democracy, freedom and well-being," Lavrov added.

As the head of the MFA noted, the Russian diplomacy in this light continues "to implement an independent, self-dependent, multi-vector foreign policy course and increase its activities in various geographical areas." "The Russian-Chinese strategic partnership, which serves as an important balancing factor in world affairs, is deepening. Today relations between Moscow and Beijing are the best in their history. The relations of a particularly privileged strategic partnership with India are progressively developing. Relations with Brazil, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and many other friendly countries are getting stronger. The second Russia-Africa summit to be held in St. Petersburg in July 2023 will further expand Russian-African relations," said Lavrov.

At the same time, according to the minister, the focus of the global economy, and politics, continues to shift from the Euro-Atlantic to Eurasia. "The European Union can no longer lay claim to political, economic and moral leadership in the Eurasian space. The states of the continent now have real freedom to choose models of development, international partners, and participation in various integration endeavors," he summarized.
