Lavrov speaks at meeting with Ghani on necessity of launching inter-Afghan negotiations

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday at a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in the margins of the international conference "Central and South Asia: Regional Interconnectedness. Challenges and Opportunities" in Tashkent stressed the need to launch inter-Afghan negotiations as soon as possible.


"The Russian side stressed the need to launch substantive inter-Afghan negotiations as soon as possible in order to end the long-standing armed conflict and stabilize the situation in that country," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. - "The minister expressed concern over the worsening situation in the northern provinces of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which directly border Central Asian states."


The ministry added that they discussed the military-political situation in Afghanistan, prospects for the national reconciliation process, and some issues of bilateral relations.
