Russia will continue to help resolve the conflict in Libya and look for ways out of the crisis in this Arab country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a lecture for MGIMO students in a videoconference format.
"We will try to find ways out of the deepest crisis that has hit this country, after the NATO forces, in gross violation of the UN Security Council resolution, bombed Libya in 2011 and actually broke this state for the sake of their selfish, narrow-minded goal to change the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. And since then, Libya has been abandoned, in fact, terrorists are moving South through Libya, weapons smuggling, drugs and other filth are moving South, and illegal migrants are moving North to Europe, so we are all now dealing with the results of adventurism that NATO unleashed in 2011. We will try, however, to help Libya," the head of Russian diplomacy said in particular.
After the overthrow and death of the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, there is a dual power in Libya. The East is ruled by the Parliament elected by the people, and the capital Tripoli - the Government of National Accord formed with the support of the UN and the European Union.
The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
On January 19, Berlin hosted an international conference on Libya with the participation of Russia, the United States, Turkey, Egypt and a number of other countries, as well as the EU and the UN. The participants called on the parties to the conflict to cease fire and proposed creating a Committee to monitor the implementation of this agreement.
