Expanding CSTO peacekeeping potential requires special attention. This will allow the organization's units to take part in UN-led peacekeeping operations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told opening remarks at a meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers.
"Special attention should be given to the task of expanding CSTO peacekeeping potential. Today we will continue to discuss solutions to organisational matters and the improvement of our legal framework. I hope that this will allow CSTO units to take part in UN-led peacekeeping operations," Lavrov noted adding that a regular dialogue should be maintained within the CSTO on the entire range of topics related to Euro-Atlantic security in order to coordinate approaches with allies.
During the meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers, which is taking place today, the Ministers discuss the state and prospects for the development of the international and regional situation and its impact on the security of the CSTO member states. Also among the central issues is the establishment of the organization's relations with the CIS and the SCO and joint counteraction to modern challenges and threats to security.
"It is planned to adopt a number of joint statements, in particular, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic war, on the confirmation of commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter," the CSTO press service added.
