The events that have occured during the year have put the world on the threshold of a new era in the field of arms control. On this, speaking at the Conference on Disarmament, which was held in Geneva, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. According to him, today the international community has to deal with aggressive foreign policy egocentrism with claims to the sole right to determine the «rules» of the world order and the fate of peoples, countries and entire regions.
In addition, there are growing attempts to destroy the basic agreements, to redraw the whole architecture of arms control under their interests. «A fresh example is the targeted demolition of the United States INF Treaty, this is the intention to untie one’s hands for an unlimited increase in the missile potential in those regions where it is supposed to force American interests.
In these conditions, as the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized, it’s alarming that almost all Western states have been indifferent and irresponsible towards the fate of the INF Treaty, including voting in the UN against the Russian resolution in its defense. And NATO members openly supported the destruction of the Treaty.
