Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will lead Russia’s delegation at the G20 Summit on November 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro. This announcement came from Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing.
"The upcoming G20 Summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18-19. At the direction of President Vladimir Putin, the Russian delegation will be headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov," Zakharova stated.
Lavrov is scheduled to address the summit’s plenary sessions on November 18, with a focus on global issues such as inequality, hunger, poverty, and reform of international institutions. Additionally, he is expected to engage in a series of bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit.
According to Zakharova, Russia intends to formally join the alliance against hunger and poverty, a flagship initiative of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. She added that Russia will advocate for inclusive strategies that support sustainable development, recognizing diverse national economic models and approaches. Lavrov will also emphasize responsible energy transitions, the maintenance of open, non-discriminatory global trade, and stable market mechanisms free from the influence of narrow interests.
Russia will also advocate for further depoliticization of the G20 and push back against what it views as Western double standards. Zakharova criticized the West for remaining silent on humanitarian issues, particularly in Gaza, and for using economic tools as a means of suppression and control. She welcomed the G20’s return to issuing ministerial declarations free from imposed geopolitical perspectives. Zakharova highlighted that Russia seeks to incorporate the agreements reached by G20 foreign ministers at the UN General Assembly in September into the summit's final declaration.
“We will reaffirm Russia’s commitment as a reliable supplier of food and energy to friendly countries in the Global South and East,” Zakharova stated, noting that Russia will emphasize its willingness to enhance President Putin’s vision for a Greater Eurasian Partnership, which seeks to establish trade routes and supply chains independent of Western control.
