Lavrov: Turkey asks for Russia's assistance in normalizing relations with Syria

18 January 2023

Turkey stands for normalization of relations with Syria and has asked Russia's assistance in this matter, a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers is being prepared. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this on Wednesday at a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2022.

"Turkey, as you know, has spoken in favor of normalizing relations with Damascus. President [of Turkey Tayyip] Erdogan said he was ready to meet with [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad. They asked us to assist, the defense ministers of Turkey and Syria met with Russian assistance, and a meeting of foreign ministers is being prepared," Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister pointed out that the US also realized the need to interact with the legitimate authorities in Syria represented by President Bashar al-Assad. "The Americans realized that "it makes no sense to nurture some Guaido (Venezuelan opposition leader - TASS) for Venezuela," that they should work with those who have the mandate of the people. "Now the same tendencies are being applied to Bashar al-Assad. The Americans have closed contacts with the Syrians on prisoners of war," Lavrov noted.

In addition, the minister stressed that the West does not want refugees to return to Syria, and the indicators of humanitarian aid to the republic are among the worst.
