Lavrov: United States hasn't offered Russia to resume talks on START III follow-on treaty

03 August 2022

The United States did not offer Russia a possibility of resuming negotiations on a document which would replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, said a press conference on Wednesday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this on Wednesday following talks with Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin.

"They have not even offered to resume these talks. There were no appeals to us about resuming the negotiation process," he said.

Asked whether Russia would be ready to invite China to the talks as well, if the process does resume, Lavrov said Beijing would then make its own decision. "When and if that happens, it will be up to the People's Republic of China to decide whether to join these negotiations, the Americans know our position very well," the minister pointed out.
