Lavrov Urges Urgent Measures for a Ceasefire in the Middle East

03 November 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized the need for urgent measures to achieve a ceasefire in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Speaking after discussions with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Lavrov highlighted the necessity of a ceasefire, humanitarian corridors to prevent further casualties, and assistance to affected civilians.

Upon establishing a ceasefire, Lavrov stressed the importance of returning to direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine, based on the UN Security Council's decision, within the 1967 borders. These negotiations aim to establish a Palestinian state coexisting with Israel in peace and security.

Lavrov expressed Russia's call for intensified efforts to create conditions for the resumption of comprehensive negotiations between Israel and Palestine, despite the current challenges. He noted that Russia continues to propose initiatives at the United Nations (UN) Security Council, focusing on ceasefire, humanitarian issues, and the release of hostages in the conflict zone.

Additionally, Lavrov discussed upcoming initiatives, such as the Arab League summit and the Arab-African summit addressing the Gaza issue. He emphasized the importance of a unified opinion among regional countries, especially in the Arab world, to facilitate peace and stability in the conflict.

The Russian foreign minister concluded that it is essential to halt the bloodshed, achieve a ceasefire, resolve humanitarian concerns, and, with the international community's efforts, resume direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. These negotiations must adhere to the international legal framework provided by UN Security Council decisions, UN General Assembly resolutions, and previous agreements between the parties. Lavrov underscored the focus on addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and establishing a Palestinian state as an integral part of the solution.
