Lavrov: West Trying to Persuade Arab Countries to Host Conference on Ukraine

26 June

The West is currently attempting to persuade certain Arab countries to host a new conference on Ukraine, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the 10th "Primakov Readings" forum.

"[The West] is now trying to persuade some Arab countries to host another such meeting on Ukraine," said Lavrov.

Lavrov criticized the West for selectively emphasizing parts of the UN Charter, particularly territorial integrity, while neglecting other aspects, such as human rights. He noted that the Charter requires all countries to respect human rights, irrespective of race, gender, language, or religion.

The minister stressed that participants in future conferences on Ukraine must fully consider the UN Charter, including its provisions on human rights. "For the future, I want to address this appeal: when countries are invited again, they should go but ask these questions about those principles of the UN Charter that neither the Western nor the Kiev side wants to see," Lavrov remarked.

Lavrov mentioned that many friendly states were invited to such meetings, some attending to avoid pressure to impose sanctions on Russia, while others hoped to steer the process in a positive direction, refusing to agree to anything without Russia's involvement. He concluded that the majority of the world understands the principled nature of the ongoing situation.
