Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the detrimental effects of Western sanctions on global trade long before the escalation in the Red Sea, during a press conference following discussions with Yemeni Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak.
"In terms of route safety, we recall how the West encouraged Ukrainians to use supposedly secure corridors during the period of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres' Black Sea grain initiative, which sadly remains in memory," - Lavrov pointed out. - "The impact is evident in the significantly complicated logistics of goods delivery and the sharp rise in insurance rates. These phenomena, directly affecting global trade, were evident long before the crisis in the Red Sea escalated with the Houthis shelling. Over the past two years or so, this has been the result of the illegal aggressive actions of the West within the framework of unprecedented sanctions."
Lavrov further noted that the repercussions of the rebel Houthis from Yemen's Ansar Allah movement on world trade "are comparable to the effects of the West's illegal sanctions against the Russian Federation on the flow of goods between different countries."
