Lavrov: work on comprehensive document on relations between Russia and Iran is being finalized

Work on a comprehensive document on cooperation between Russia and Iran is being finalized, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Wednesday following talks with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian.


"We are satisfied with the way our bilateral relations are developing, they are reaching a new qualitative level, which will be fixed in a big interstate treaty, the work on this document is now being finalized," he said. 


Lavrov emphasized that the document will be of strategic importance and will outline the main guidelines for further development of the whole complex of Russian-Iranian relations in the coming decades.


The Russian foreign minister also noted that a document on long-term cooperation in the economic sphere and a corresponding road map are being worked on. "So in the economic sphere as well, we are revealing the potential that is available and far from being exhausted yet," he added.


Lavrov said a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Iran is scheduled to be held in Russia by the end of this year. 


"Practical work is underway within the framework of the bilateral intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation, it plans to hold another meeting in Russia before the end of this year," the Russian foreign minister said.  - "Today we have gone over all the issues that are on the agenda of this meeting, taking into account the conditions in which our economic operators, our agencies are working at the present stage."


Despite the sanctions, Lavrov said, trade between the two countries is growing at a record pace, increasing by more than 40% in the first seven months to about $2 billion 700 million.
