Lebanon’s acting Health Minister, Firas Abiad, provided updated figures on the casualties caused by Israeli bombings and shelling since the military escalation began in October 2023. Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, he revealed that the attacks by Israeli forces have killed 4,047 individuals and left over 16,593 people injured.
“Since September 15, when the intensified strikes on Beirut and other cities began, fatalities have risen from 645 to 3,402, while the number of injured has increased from 1,983 to 14,655,” Abiad noted.
He emphasized that these numbers are not final. “There are still bodies trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings, and search-and-rescue teams are continuing their efforts in affected areas,” he explained.
A ceasefire agreement brokered by the US and France came into effect on November 27, aiming to de-escalate tensions. Under the deal, the Lebanese Army is being deployed along the southern border, supported by UN peacekeeping forces. Meanwhile, Israel is set to begin withdrawing its troops from Lebanese territory, a process expected to take up to 60 days.
