The Lebanese foreign ministry condemned the burning of the Quran in Stockholm and urged the authorities to recognize these actions as crimes. The foreign ministry's statement was circulated Thursday by the national news agency Al-Wataniya.
"We call for putting an end to such provocations and considering them crimes punishable by law given their negative repercussions on relations between religions and peoples," the statement said.
The ministry also stressed that the Quran burnings were an assault on the holy Muslim text and were aimed at spreading Islamophobia in Swedish society. "Such actions cannot be justified by the principle of freedom of speech because they fuel hatred and violence," the Foreign Ministry said.
