Lebanon Files Complaint Against Israel with UN Security Council for Using Phosphorus Munitions

01 November 2023

The Lebanese government has submitted a complaint to the UN Security Council, saying that Israeli troops have been using phosphorus munitions in border areas. Abdallah Bou Habib, the acting foreign minister of Lebanon, made this statement on the social networking platform X (formerly Twitter).

"We have called upon the UN Security Council to condemn the Israeli forces' utilization of white phosphorus shells in their ongoing attacks on Lebanese territory," stated the acting minister. He highlighted that evidence of the use of phosphorus munitions, which are prohibited by international conventions, has also been shared with the Human Rights Watch, a human rights organization.

"As a consequence, Lebanese authorities are compelled to combat spreading forest fires," emphasized Bou Habib.

Israeli forces reportedly employed phosphorus shells once more on October 31 when targeting the outskirts of the towns of Yaroun, al-Duheira, Aalma ech Chaab, and Labbouna, as per the national news agency Al Wataniya. This resulted in fires in olive groves and orchards. Wadi Honin and Sheikh Zayn also experienced significant forest fires. Fortunately, no civilian casualties were reported.
