Lebanon does not have sufficient financial capacity to cope with the consequences of the Beirut bombing, the Minister of Economy and Trade of Lebanon, Raoul Nehme told Sky News Arabia.
"Lebanon does not have the financial capacity to overcome the consequences of the explosion. We ask for the help of the international community. The damage caused by the explosion is estimated at billions of dollars. We will need time to assess all the damage done," Nehme said.
He also added that " the only solution for Lebanon is to cooperate with the International Monetary Fund."
However, according to experts, the start of large-scale reconstruction and construction works is unlikely to contribute to the restart of the entire economy of Lebanon. According to The Wall Street Journal, this is due to the orientation of the Lebanese economy on imports, including construction materials, as well as the fact that the explosion destroyed a key infrastructure facility that served imports.
