Lebanon Urges International Community to Pressure Israel to Respect Sovereignty

28 March

Lebanon has called on the international community to exert maximum pressure on Israel to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which established a ceasefire on the Lebanese-Israeli border. The appeal was made by Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati following a meeting at the Serai government palace with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

"Israel must stop encroaching on Lebanon's sovereignty and halt its attacks on Lebanese territory," - Mikati stated, as quoted by the government press office on X (formerly Twitter). - "We condemn the Israeli strike on Hebbariye in southern Lebanon, which was launched on Wednesday at dawn and killed seven medical workers."

During his talks with Meloni, Mikati discussed the "close and historic bilateral relations between Lebanon and Italy." He expressed satisfaction over the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 2728, which envisages a truce in the Gaza Strip for the holy month of Ramadan, and emphasized the need for its implementation to achieve a sustainable ceasefire.

Meloni arrived in Beirut on a brief visit and is scheduled to visit the Italian battalion, which is part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. During the talks, she addressed the issue of displaced Syrians in Lebanon and measures against illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean region.

"We agreed on the need for coordination between Lebanon and the EU to find ways that will lead to a sustainable solution to the problem of displaced people," Meloni stated. She also emphasized the need to expedite the election of Lebanon's new president to pave the way for economic reforms.
