Lebanon’s PM Prioritizes Ceasefire and Refugee Return

19 November

The Lebanese government is focused on swiftly halting Israeli aggression and restoring sovereignty over its entire territory, according to Prime Minister Najib Mikati. His remarks came following discussions with Amos Hochstein, Deputy Assistant to the US President, who visited Beirut as part of a mediation mission.

“Our main priority is the immediate establishment of a ceasefire and the creation of conditions for refugees to return home,” the prime minister stated, as quoted by the government's press office on X. “The barbaric destruction of our cities and the killing of civilians must stop.”

Mikati reaffirmed Beirut’s commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and expressed plans to strengthen the Lebanese Army's presence in southern regions near the Israeli border.

Hochstein also held talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a negotiator representing Hezbollah. According to the US envoy, there is now a genuine opportunity to end the conflict based on a US-proposed resolution plan. He expressed hope for a final decision on the ceasefire within days.

The proposed agreement outlines a 60-day transitional period during which Israeli forces would withdraw from southern Lebanon, allowing Lebanese Army units to take control of border areas. As for Hezbollah, it would relocate its forces and heavy weaponry north of the Litani River, maintaining a 30-kilometer distance from the border.
