30 May 2023

The Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan has nominated current President of the country Shavkat Mirziyoyev as a candidate for the early elections of the head of state. This was announced by the press service of the political association on Tuesday.

The decision was taken at the party congress, which was held on May 30.

Earlier, Mirziyoyev signed a law on holding an early presidential election on July 9. Uzbekistan held a referendum April 30 on a new version of the constitution that would extend the presidential term from five to seven years and allow Mirziyoyev to run for office again after two consecutive terms.

According to Uzbekistan's Electoral code, political parties have the right to nominate presidential candidates, provided they are registered with the Ministry of Justice at least six months before the election. Five political parties are currently operating in the country: the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the Milliy Tiklanish Democratic Party, the Adolat Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, and the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan. In accordance with CEC resolution, all of them should hold meetings by June 1 and approve presidential candidates.

On Monday, the Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, which supported Robakhon Makhmudova, the first deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, and the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, which nominated its chairman, Ulugbek Inoyatov, nominated their candidates at the congresses. On Tuesday, the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan nominated its leader, Abdushukur Khamzaev.
