Libya Officially Denies Reports of Turkey Leasing Port of Al-Khums

18 August 2023

The Government of National Unity (GNU) of Libya has formally denied the reports of Turkey's supposed lease of the port of Al-Khums in Libya for the purpose of establishing a military base. The GNU's spokesperson, Mohamed Hamouda, made this announcement during an official visit to the Al-Khums port, alongside Muhammad al-Siwi, the head of the Ports and Maritime Transportation Authority, and Nuriddin al-Bouni, Navy Chief of Staff.

Hamouda stated that the claims about leasing the Al Khums port for foreign military bases are baseless rumors and urged journalists to verify information carefully to avoid stirring tensions in Libyan public opinion. Al-Siwi emphasized the development plans for the port, aiming to enhance trade with neighboring nations and contribute to the growth of Libya's economy.

These refutations come after Turkish media, citing anonymous sources, reported on August 17 that Turkey had purportedly leased the Libyan port of Al Khums for 99 years to establish a military base. It was alleged that the base would house attack drones and air defense systems. The Turkish authorities have not yet commented on these reports.
