The Libyan leadership does not maintain any relations with the authorities in Ukraine, as stated by Libya's Acting Foreign Minister of the Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour, in an interview with TASS at the first Russia-Africa Ministerial Conference.
“I don’t believe there are any ties between terrorists and the regime in Ukraine. I don’t think so. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, there are no relations between the Libyan government and the Ukrainian authorities,” he said.
Al-Baour emphasized that history has shown the Libyan people to be moderate and opposed to terrorism. “However, due to security vulnerabilities within Libya and challenges with border control, terrorist organizations may attempt to exploit these situations to destabilize security,” he explained. “Terrorism is a threat everywhere. Libya is not isolated from the Sahel countries, and since 2011, Libya has had a substantial amount of weaponry.”
He further noted, “In 2015, some Libyan cities, such as Derna and Sirte, fell under ISIS control (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia — TASS). Yet the nature and character of the Libyan people inherently reject extremism and such movements. In Sirte, it was the civilian population that ultimately uprooted and defeated the terrorists.”
