Libyan presidential candidate Fathi Bashagha told RIA Novosti that if he wins the election he expects to cooperate with Russia constructively.
Previously, Bashagha was the head of the ministry of internal affairs of the government of national accord (GNA) of Libya.
According to one of Libya's most influential politicians, "Russia played a positive role during the (four-party) meeting in Moscow in January 2020 and the Berlin conference."
"We encourage it (Russia) to continue this approach and work with the international community to support presidential and parliamentary elections ... In the future, we look forward to cooperating with it constructively in a number of areas," Bashagha said.
After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi n 2011, Libya ceased to function as a unified state. Over the past few years, the country has been in a standoff between the Government of national accord (GNA) of Fayez Sarraj, seated in Tripoli in the west, and the authorities in eastern Libya, supported by the Libyan national army under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The UN-sponsored Libyan Political dialogue forum in Geneva in early February elected a transitional executive in Libya to lead the country until general elections scheduled for December 24. Former Libyan GNA ambassador to Greece Mohamed Menfi was elected as the new head of the Presidential council by a list vote. Libyan businessman and politician Abdulhamid Dbeiba was elected head of the transitional government.
