Libya's Government of National Accord called on the UN Security Council to bring Haftar to justice

13 May 2020

The Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya has appealed to the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to bring to justice the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, for the shelling of Tripoli.

A letter to the international organizations was sent by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Siala.

"We hold the Security Council historically responsible for fulfilling its responsibilities to maintain peace and security, and we demand to condemn Haftar's egregious attack on the capital Tripoli and bring the perpetrators to justice, "the Minister said in a message, and also demanded that "efforts be made to bring the perpetrators to justice."

At the end of last week, the territory of the seaside district of Tripoli, where the Turkish Embassy and the residence of the Italian Ambassador are located, was subjected to rocket fire. At least two people were killed.

The Libyan National Army said it was not involved in the incident, blaming "terrorist groups" for the shooting.

After the overthrow and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has a dual power: the East is ruled by the Parliament elected by the people, and the West, in the capital Tripoli, - the Government of National Accord formed with the support of the United Nations and the European Union.

The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan National Army led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has not stopped trying to capture Tripoli since April 2019.
