Malaysia Anticipates Becoming a BRICS Partner Country Before Full Membership

09 July

Malaysia expects to become a partner country of BRICS before joining the association as a full member, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"There is a possibility that Malaysia's application process to join BRICS will take some time, but thanks to good relations with member countries, we may be able to become a partner country," Ibrahim stated, as reported by Bernama news agency. The prime minister also highlighted BRICS' "great potential to become a global economic powerhouse," which he believes will positively impact Malaysia's long-term economic growth.

In March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that a new "partner country" category was being considered for the BRICS summit set to take place in Kazan in October.

Prime Minister Ibrahim mentioned in June that Malaysia would soon begin the formal process of joining BRICS. Additionally, Minister of International Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Aziz has spoken about the economic benefits of participating in the association.
