Malaysia has expressed its support for the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed the nation's stance in a statement on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia).
"On behalf of the Malaysian government and all Malaysian people, I express in the strongest possible terms our support for the UNSC Resolution 2728, calling for an immediate ceasefire of all hostilities in Gaza, the immediate release of all hostages, and the immediate and urgent, accelerated delivery of aid to the affected territories," Anwar Ibrahim stated.
He emphasized the need to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza, who have been enduring immense hardship for almost six months. Anwar Ibrahim called on the United States to pressure its allies to respect the will of the international community and honor the ceasefire accordingly, ensuring the swift arrival of relief aid.
"Malaysia remains committed to the cause of Palestine and will continue its efforts to establish an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and to recognize Palestine as a full member of the United Nations," Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed.
On March 25, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a draft resolution prepared by ten non-permanent members, demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (beginning on March 10). Fourteen members of the Security Council, including Russia, China, Great Britain, and France, voted in favor of the document. The United States abstained, while Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, proposed an oral amendment to replace "prolonged ceasefire" with "permanent ceasefire." However, this proposal was not supported by the majority of voters, with Washington voting against it.
