Malaysia to Begin BRICS Membership Process Soon

17 June

Malaysia will soon start the official process of joining the BRICS group, according to the country's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

"We have made a decision [on this matter]. We will soon begin going through the official procedures. We are now awaiting the final results, the response from the South African government," he said in an interview with the Chinese portal Guancha.

Ibrahim added that he had fruitful discussions on BRICS expansion with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

BRICS was founded in 2006 and initially included Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011. Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia became full members on January 1, 2024. According to Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov, about 30 countries have expressed interest in joining BRICS as of June 6.
