Malaysia's Deputy Health Minister to pay a fine for violating quarantine

29 April 2020

In Malaysia, the World Court found Azmi Ghazali, the country's Deputy Health Minister, guilty of violating the country's special provision on the movement of citizens.

The official will pay a fine of 1,000 ringgit ($228).

A member of the Perak state government Razman Zakaria will also have to pay a fine.

"If the convicts do not pay the specified fine, they will spend a month in prison," the court said in a statement.

It is reported that on April 18, the Deputy Minister, accompanied by representatives of the state administration, visited one of the local hospitals, where he checked the preparation for receiving those infected with the coronavirus.

After that, the official was supposed to go to the mosque, but before that, he stopped for lunch. Photos from lunch he posted on Facebook, and he was criticized for violating the rules of quarantine, which prohibit, among other things, eating in public places.

Under the pressure of the public, law enforcement agencies conducted a review of the incident, after which the case was transferred to the court.

In Malaysia, the number of people infected with the coronavirus exceeds 5.8 thousand people.
