The Republic of Maldives will be an active dialogue partner with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and intends to work closely with the member states of the association. Maldivian Ambassador to New Delhi Ibrahim Shahib told TASS on Tuesday, commenting on Malé's designation as an SCO dialogue partner.

"The Maldives is committed to being an active and responsible dialogue partner of the SCO, following the values of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity and the pursuit of common development," he said.

"The Maldives will continue to work closely with the SCO and its member states on a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, health, the environment, climate change, science and technology," Shahib stressed.

The ambassador said the official designation of the Maldives as a dialogue partner will also be a step forward in the government's strategy to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties in Asia.

The SCO summit is taking place in New Delhi on Tuesday, with all the organization's member states taking part. Iran, Belarus and Mongolia are invited as observers. Turkmenistan is participating as a guest. The heads of the SCO Secretariat and the SCO Regional Antiterrorist Structure (RATS) are attending the summit. The heads of six international and regional organizations are also invited: UN, ASEAN, CIS, CSTO, EAEC and CICA.
