The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has acknowledged the victory of the pro-presidential People's National Congress Party in the parliamentary elections and declared its readiness to cooperate.
MDP spokesperson Fayaz Ismail stated, "We congratulate the People's National Congress on its victory in the elections. MPs from the MDP will be ready to cooperate with the government to assert our democratic values as a responsible opposition."
Ismail also expressed disappointment with his party's election results and called for revitalization, saying, "Despite the disappointing outcome, now is the time to renew our commitment and work even more closely with our supporters."
According to preliminary vote counts, the ruling People's National Congress party secured an absolute majority in the Maldives' parliamentary elections, with its MPs winning 65-67 seats. In contrast, the MDP only secured 12 seats, a significant decrease from its previous 65 mandates. A total of 93 seats in the Maldives People's Majlis were up for election, with a turnout exceeding 72%. The country's Election Commission will announce the official results within seven days of voting.
