17 March 2022

The Afghan embassy in Washington and the Afghan consulates in New York and Los Angeles have closed due to a lack of funds. This was reported Thursday by the Afghan Pajhwok news agency, citing a statement from the Afghan embassy in the United States.

Afghan diplomatic missions are facing growing problems in daily operations and acute financial difficulties due to the US administration freezing their bank accounts, the Afghan embassy said in a statement.

The diplomatic mission noted that it has sought the assistance of the US State Department and offered to transfer responsibility for the safety of the embassy and other diplomatic missions to the US administration in accordance with the Vienna Convention.

According to the statement, the termination of diplomatic activities and the transfer of responsibility for the safety of property to the US State Department came into force on March 16.
